FREE MRT Rides on 2009 Philippine Independence Day

When I attempted to exit the Araneta Center - Cubao MRT station on 12 June 2009, all the turnstiles had the red X glinting from its glass windows, indicating that none can be used to exit.

And then, to my consternation, the MRT guard announced that all the MRT rides are free, and that everyone should just pass through.

Although I followed the guard’s instructions, I knew from a previous experience that my MRT stored value card will register the ‘non-exit’ and will be charged accordingly when I attempt to use it again, so I hurried to the MRT window even though it had a CLOSED sign.

I informed the MRT staff member that I had already used my card and that my entry point was North Avenue. She obliged by slipping the card through the machine, and then returning it to me.

I was also able to clarify that the MRT rides are free from 5-7pm on 12 June 2009. However, since I had already used my card before 5pm, I was not able to avail of the free ride. :-(

After I’ve thanked her, I wondered what will happen to the other stored value card holders who don’t know the consequences of not having their cards ‘exited’ properly. And, for that matter, what will happen to the single entry cards that were not collected by the Araneta Center - Cubao MRT station guards?
