When LRT Drivers Employ Handless Driving

For the past month, whenever I go to Manila for my trek to Instituto Cervantes, I usually ride on the first coach of the LRT 2 or the purple line so that when I alight at the last station, Recto, I am very near the stairs going down to the exit. So, I’m usually within a few feet of the door leading to the interiors of the driver’s cabin.

I was shocked the first time it happened, and, I’m still trying to tell myself that it’s alright when it would occur sporadically ever since.

I’m referring to the fact that as the LRT train is slowing down upon nearing the Recto station, the door would be flung open, and the driver would prepare to go out, with his hands obviously nowhere near the controls, which I assume are set on automatic.

Of course, the trains came to a standstill with nary a scratch or incident. However, I would still feel more comfortable if the drivers kept their hands on the wheel and their attention on the tracks, so to speak, until the train has come to a full stop.
