When Can the Taxi Driver Start the Meter

For me, there is a verbal contract that must be agreed on, such as the inquiry whether a certain destination is acceptable to the taxi driver, and the passenger and the driver’s mutual agreement to proceed from the short conversation.
Therefore, I find it unacceptable when the taxi driver starts the meter before the mutual agreement phase, so, I usually request the driver to press the meter again if such is the case.
The cab that I boarded on 22 June 2009 took great offense at my request and his voice rose as I explained. Fortunately, we were at a stop waiting for the green light, so I took the opportunity to get down.
But, the driver was determined to get in the last word so he complained that my destination was too far anyway.
