The Taximeter Died

As the taxi neared my destination, I glanced down towards the taximeter to find it blank. Since I periodically check the digits, I knew that it had been on just a few moments ago. I called the cab driver’s attention to the disappearance.
He bemoaned the fact that he had just been to the Land Transportation Office or LTO the day before to have the meter checked, and, now, he has to go back to have the same piece of equipment tested and then pay the resulting fees again.
Since I usually go to the Ortigas Center, I had a fair idea of how much the fare should be. so I paid him the average amount plus tip. However, if I had needed to go to an unfamiliar place, the taxi driver would have definitely been at a disadvantage because he has absolutely no proof of the actual fare.
