How to Get Out of the UP Campus at 9.40pm After having watched Dr. Anton Juan’s play, Hinabing Pakpak ng Ating Mga Anak (Woven Wings of Our Children), at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater on 18 July 2008 at the College of Arts and Sciences, I walked briskly out of the building.
I was hoping a taxi or Philcoa jeep would pass by, but no such luck. So I began the short trek towards Katipunan, when I spied a jeepney beside the College of Education, waiting for passengers. After I ascertained that it was going to Katipunan, I boarded the jeepney and hoped fervently that it would fill up soon.
Why Isn’t There a Student Discount? While waiting for other passengers, a girl asked if there was a discount for students. The lady fare collector replied that there was none, and that the rate for both the regular and student passengers is the same.
When the girl passenger protested that there should be a 10% student discount, the lady pointed out to the fare matrix where it states that the rate from UP to Katipunan is actually Php 10. Therefore, the Php 8.50 rate is already discounted, which both regular passengers and students enjoy.
The girl examined the fare matrix and commented that most of the rates are too high. A male passenger concurred with her observation and added that the Php 0.50 increase from Php 8 to Php 8.50 is not yet implemented.
Regular Occurrence Even with matrices, the disagreement scene in the jeepney will occur repeatedly all over Metro Manila as everyone, from passengers to drivers, adjust to the rate hikes in the face of surging gas prices and consumer demand.
